The 21st Century advent of super fast, network computing devices requires a re-thinking of the traditional approach to technology and education. The "integration of technology in education" is a 20th century concept that puts the teacher at the center of focus, while "CYBER-LEARNING" is a 21st century concept that puts the student at the center of focus. A National Science Foundation report "Fostering Learning in the Networked World" provides an extensive rationale for cyberlearning including the fact that “incorporating information and communications technology into science and mathematics can restructure the necessary expertise for reasoning and learning in these domains, in effect opening up greater access to complex subject matter.” NSF in response to increased interest in Cyber-learning, NSF is hosting the first ever conference on Cyberlearing in Berkley, CA today and tomorrow. I am at the conference and will be posting more thoughts on this topic in the next post.
